Survivor Slam

Home  /  Shows  /  Survivor Slam

In 2009, Slam Nahuatl, a local poetry troupe, did something extraordinary – they won a national poetry competition that took place on Broadway, featuring some of America’s best performance poets. And then they did something beyond extraordinary – they used their victory as a catalyst to feed a single mother and her two children for an entire year’s worth of groceries.

In 2012, Slam Nahuatl has raised the bar, setting an even loftier goal of feeding multiple families for an entire year and sending survivors of traumatic brain injury to the unique Camp Bruce McCoy.

At the conclusion of the End Hunger Slam Series Nahuatl was able to raise enough money coordinating with chldrenincorporated to sponsor 2 single parent families in the area, providing money for groceries.

Nahuatl has now switched their cause to helping fund Camp Bruce McCoy, a one of a kind camp for survivors of traumatic brain injuries. This camp runs for 2 weeks every summer in Chesapeake, and gives handicapped campers opportunities to do things like horseback riding, canoeing, swimming, archery, and overall just interacting with a group of wonderful people, in an environment where they are free to make decisions and not judged. For most campers these 2 weeks are the highlight of their year, and Nahuatl will be helping to pay camp admission fees for campers who need financial assistance.

How can you help?

Simple. Attend and bring as many socially-conscious friends as you can with you.

What is a slam?

A slam is a poetry competition in which 5 members of the audience are selected to judge poets who present original work in a dynamic, theatrical way. Out-of-town guest features will include internationally acclaimed poets who have appeared on HBO Def Poetry.
